I See You!

Well, Mallory doesn't see me all that clearly yet, but she's finally got her eyes open. I didn't take too many pictures, as I'm not all too sure the flash is good for that brand new set of peepers she's got now. As far as Marina goes, maybe tomorrow hers will start to open.

Isn't this the cutest little puppy yawn?!?

One Week Old

Our little girls have finally hit the one week mark, so I hurried and took a few pictures this morning. They weren't cooperating very well, so I may be re-taking these photos later on today, lol. But for now, here they are at exactly one week old.
MALLORY
This is little Mallory. She was born at just under 5 oz. at birth, but now weighing in at a whopping 7 5/8 oz. That's my girl!

MARINA
And these last photos are of sweet Marina. She weighed right at 5 oz. when born, but she now is at 7 7/8 oz. In a few days, they should be at about double their birthweight!

Cry Baby Marina

As most mothers do, Maya was taking a much needed break from baby duty. Marina woke up all too soon and was hungry and needed her mama. Don't worry, Maya was on her way to comfort her when I shut the camera off. I thought it was too cute not to post. ;) This is what a nearly one week old puppy sounds like-

BTW, Marina seems to be the bigger cry baby of the two, always whines when she isn't getting what she wants when she wants it (which is always NOW). Lucky for them, Maya is always right there as soon as someone cries. They can't see or hear right now, but they know as soon as she's stepped in that box that she's there. They sense her presence and usually stop crying immediately.

5 Days Old Today

I just took a couple of short videos (sorry they're not the best quality) of our little girls nursing. I can just sit and watch them hours on end. I still can't get over how freakin' cute they are- every movement, every puppy noise, is just adorable. Of course, I'm biased. ;)

In these videos Marina is in the front, Mallory is in the back. Marina has a way of twisting her body around while she nurses- sometimes she even ends up on her back (not sure if that is okay, really) for little periods at a time. I just love their little feet, sooooo cute.

A Mother's Love

It's just warms my heart to walk in and find this. What's better than a full belly and a warm mom to snuggle with?!?

Introducing Maya and Her Two Baby Girls!!!

For those who don't know the dilemma we faced earlier this morning, here it goes. Maya went into active labor around 2am this morning, she was pushing for over two hours when I thought it was probably too long. I called an emergency vet, they told me to give her more time- another hour or two. I thought about that for a while, didn't feel comfortable with it and then called a different emergency vet and they told me to bring her right in. So, after much deliberation, we brought our Maya in to get checked out. She received some much needed calcium and a shot of oxytocin and made a little progress. They repeated the process but she didn't improve any. They told us the first little one was probably already deceased and that Maya needed an emergency c-section to have any chance of saving the other. At this point it is 8am, I'm already crying but have to make a decision.
We decide to take our Maya from this emergency clinic and transfer her to our veterinarian (since now the office is open) to do this procedure for our girl. We trust them with our pets, and though this may seem a stupid idea, I think it was an inspired one. Both of our little girls and our Maya have pulled through just fine. And fyi, we saved $1400.00 by taking Maya to our vet. We are so happy! I want to thank everyone for your prayers, every one of them counted. Thanks again everyone!!!

And this is our chunky little girl, though she actually weighs less than her sister. I would have taken a picture of her sister, but she was asleep and I didn't want to wake her. Plus, Maya needs her beauty sleep too. :)

Day 63

This was Maya yesterday; I think she's ready for these puppies to come out already. Today is her actual due date and we were really hoping today would be the day. We're still waiting, though. Her temperature has dropped and she was showing signs of pre-labor yesterday but today nothing yet, but she is showing other signs like hiding under the bed every now and then and digging frequently. ??? I'd like to think that today is the day.

And this is her belly now. It's pretty big for only two puppies. Below is another video. The bigger they get, the more active they become. Poor Maya, these puppies are crazy, lol. ;)

X-Rays

We finally had Maya's vet appointment this morning to do a head count on the puppies. We were so anxious to know how many puppies to expect. And here it is: TWO!!! I'm really happy with that too, especially since this is her first litter. I didn't want her to be too overwhelmed, so two is just perfect. We don't know what exactly to expect as anything can happen, but we hope delivery is easy for her. The vet told us that she has a fairly large birth canal, so he seemed to think she wouldn't have complications, but you never know. We're prepared for just about anything; we've been reading sooooo much. Unfortunately, there are so many conflicting opinions on the specifics of whelping a litter, but luckily we have our trusted vet to rely on. He was able to sit down with us a for quite a while and give us great advice and answer some questions I had. He's a great guy; we've always really liked our veterinarian. We have less than one week (unless she goes past due) to go; I'm hoping she delivers these pups on Saturday. That way we'd have all weekend to be with her and the newborns. Hopefully, the next post will be pictures of the healthy puppies. Wish us luck!

This is a better shot of the x-ray, close up. Here you can see the two heads and two spines. How cute!!!
